SUMMER SATURDAY FAMILY PROGRAMS IN JULY & AUGUST 2021

11 am 12 pm and 2-3pm, each day
Included with museum admission: $5.00/adult & $3.00/children 5-12 years.

July 3: SUMMERTIME BIRD WALK
What are birds up during summertime? Most have finished nesting and are raising their young, some have already left the nest. Explore the woods and field to discover the less known lives of birds after their spring arrival! Binoculars provided, Ages 6+.

July 10: NATIVE GARDENING FOR BIRDS & POLLINATORS
Learn about native plants and how beneficial they are for native birds and pollinators and how to encourage them in your own backyard. Ages 8+

July 17: ALL ABOUT WEATHERING & EROSION
Observe how water sculpts the landscape! Explore the beach for signs of erosion, weathering and more unique geological phenomena of our preserve. 7+

July 24: POND DISCOVERY
With buckets, nets & magnifiers, join us as we dip into the world of the pond! Observe small animals & insects that live in the pond and learn all about their life cycles. Wear sneakers. All ages.

July 31: BEACH EXPLORATION
Explore the shoreline at Garvies beach along Hempstead Harbor. Search for crabs, clams, mussels, & more as we learn about this interesting environment! Hands-on exploration for children and adults of all ages. Sneakers recommended.

August 7: BUTTERFLY & INSECT STUDY
Join us as we explore our field and gardens environments in search of a variety of insects, butterflies & more! Learn about life cycles and why insects are so important to our ecosystem! Use bug catchers, magnifiers, nets & field guides! All ages welcome!

August 14: ANCIENT ANIMALS & LIVING FOSSILS WALK
Take a trip back in time as we discover living fossils on our nature preserve! Ages 7+

August 21: OUTDOOR SURVIVAL 101
Learn knot-tying, navigation & signaling, fire-making, first aid, hazardous plants & animals, identify edible plants roots, shoots, berries & more! Recommended 8+.

August 28: INVASIVE PLANT ID
Learn how to identify some non-native invasive plants, why they are detrimental to the ecosystem and how you can effectively remove them. Plus learn history behind their introduction and how they are used as food and medicine. 8+
